Google Alerts

Google currently offers six types of alert searches: "News", "Web", "Blogs", "Comprehensive", "Video" and "Groups". A News alert is an email that lets the user know if new articles make it into the top ten results of his/her Google News search. A Web alert is an email that lets the user know if new web pages appear in the top twenty results for his/her Google Web search. A News & Web alert is an email that lets the user know when new articles related to his/her search term make it into the top ten results for a Google News search or the top twenty results for a Google Web search. A Groups alert is an email that lets the user know if new posts make it into the top fifty results of his/her Google Groups search.

Google Alerts also allow its users to determine the frequency in which checks are made for new results. Three options are available: "once a day", "once a week", or "as it happens". These options do not necessarily control how often they will receive alerts. The first option, for example, means they will receive at most one alert email per day. The "as it happens" option can result in many alert emails per day, depending on the search.

Google Alerts will send you e-mail when new entries (or even a single entry) are added to the top 10 to 50 search results (depending on the category of Alert) for the specific search term you ask Google to monitor. Currently, Google provides 6 different Alert capabilities, described below, and you'll probably find a need for all of them at some point.

Choose which type of alert you would like to receive. Google Alerts can notify you whenever your name appears in a news story, blog article, web page, video or group. You can also choose "comprehensive," which alerts you in all the previously mentioned instances. Google Alerts can help you track whenever Google indexes new webpages. For instance, if you like to track the mention of "Windows Vista Service Pack 1" on Microsoft website, just setup the following web alert.

What's "out there" about you that a potential employer might find? Hopefully, you know what's there now. Set up Google Alerts for your name (with and without your middle initial), and Google will let you know about new items that show up in the top search results on your name.

You can create up to 1000 Google Alerts at a time. If you need to create more, you will have to delete some or send them to a different email address.

Interested in a specific industry? Set up a Google Alert for the industry, and Google will let you know about new items in the top search results for the industry.

Say you are a big fan of "John Public" and like to be notified whenever John writes a new story on his blog(s). You can either subscribe to his blog feed but if email suits you more, here's how to track Mr John.

Tips for reducing Inbox clutter created from email alert messages - Now that you are tempted to setup Google alerts for every topic of your interest, here's some advice - always enclose alert queries inside quotes else you may get irrelevant results. Use a single alert for related topics and separate queries using OR operator. Make sure all words are spelled correctly.

You will sometimes have to experiment with Google alerts for a few days before choosing one that delivers the most meaningful results for you. Google lets you create up to 1000 alerts.
